The Beginning of a Southington Tradition

It all started in 1969 when a 50-pound bag of flour was handed to Dorothea “Dot” Czarnota and her husband, Lawrence “Larry” Czarnota, with the task to create something special for the first Southington Apple Harvest Festival. After trying rings, chunks, and wedges, Dot perfected the apple fritter recipe that has become a tradition lasting more than five decades.

Today, people line up year after year for a warm bag of fritters, fresh from the fryer. The recipe hasn’t changed, and neither has the purpose. Every batch supports ministries that help families in town, veterans who served our country, and neighbors in need. These fritters are more than food—they are part of Southington’s story.
